Low fat food products – are they the answer?

Fat is high in energy /calories – If we eat too much of it we can sometimes tip the energy balance scale which may lead to weight gain. Choosing low fat food products can be a preferable choice particularly if a decrease in fat means a decrease in saturated fat or bad fat (trans fatty acids). These products include low fat dairy, skim milk and low fat cheese.

However be cautious of some foods labelled as low fat, as sometimes they may contain a lot of added sugars. These foods include confectionery and lollies. Although they are not high in fat they do contain a lot of sugar and therefore should only be eaten in moderation.

Not all fats are bad for us and it is important that we consume small amounts of unsaturated or good fat that can be found in oily fish, nut and seeds, canola and olive oil as well as avocado.
